Craig as a baby

Photographer: Craig L. Getchius

I have four loves in my life; family, photography, music and sports. In my childhood I dreamed of being a professional athlete. In my teen years illness and reality forced me to change my dreams of glory to a career as a writer and or a musician. Marriage meant it was time to make money and I took up photography as a career.

I became a professional photographer in 1976. Like most that enter the field of photography, I started out as a portrait photographer, then weddings and events. Gradually I matured and actually started making money with my camera in the fashion, glamour and advertising genres. Then one morning in 2006 I woke up and looked in the mirror and realized half my life was behind me. I wanted more out of a career than what I was presently doing and from that day forward I started slowly, but surely, learning the skills to be a landscape and nature photography. To speed my growth in the skills of being a landscape and nature photographer my wife and I moved from Illinois to Wyoming.

Being a photographer of landscape and wildlife was much more difficult than I imagined. You have to start your day early in the morning, then wait until the light is just perfect. Sometimes the worse the weather the better the photographic opportunity.  Bears, moose, elk and wolves don’t pose for you and you have to be willing to trek long distances to get the right photo.  This was all new to me. But the glory of nature has a way of humbling oneself and I find no greater satisfaction than capturing that perfect moment in nature with my camera.

Family illness and other situations destroyed my timeline of establishing myself in my new photographic endeavor.  Now all that is behind me and it is with this website I hope to introduce myself to the world. Hopefully you will enjoy my work and will stop by from time to time to see what I have accomplished. My photography is a work of love and I dedicate it to all those who have encouraged me when I was down and who have stayed by my side when things were rough.  Of course that number one person who has always been there for me was and is April. Without April and the others who supported me,  Al Bundy and I would have a lot in common.
